The sterile white walls of the hospital room seemed to amplify the silence. Michael clutched the wallet, his knuckles white. His wife lay in the bed, her breathing shallow, her face pale. The medical bills loomed, a monstrous threat to their fragile hope. The wallet could be the answer.

He pictured his wife’s smile, the love in her eyes. The thought of losing her was a physical pain, a constant ache in his chest. He could pay the bills, provide the care she needed. But he knew he should not.
