"I'm so over it all," Clara thought. The text, meant for her sister, had been sent instead to her mother, a woman who always knew how to make Clara's life difficult. She slumped against the wall, her body heavy with the weight of the potential consequences.

Her breath came in ragged gasps. The silence of the house felt deafening. She could practically hear the words, the condemnation in her mother’s voice. She grabbed her purse, throwing it over her shoulder, and rushed out the door. The fresh air did little to alleviate the pressure building inside.
