The request arrived with an almost audible fanfare. It was from Mark, the boy who used to shove him into lockers. He stared at the screen, a sense of almost giddy amusement bubbling inside. He was now a successful musician, touring the world and performing to sold-out crowds.

He immediately changed his profile picture to a photo of himself on stage, bathed in the glow of the lights, a guitar slung over his shoulder. He posted a link to his latest album, a collection of songs that were his heart and soul.

He felt an exhilarating rush, a feeling of effortless superiority. He imagined Mark scrolling through his profile, the envy and regret simmering beneath the surface. He felt light, untethered. He turned up the music and danced around his apartment.
