The steel doors clamped shut with a heavy thud, trapping Ben and Carol. Carol’s face flushed with panic. Ben felt a quiet buzz of power. He’d done it. The final, subtle nudge had been delivered.

"Don't panic, Carol," he said, trying to keep the amusement out of his voice. He knew she was a worrier. The key was to remain calm and in control.

He casually leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. The elevator's overhead lights flickered intermittently, painting the interior in harsh, uneven light. He knew what she feared, knew how to capitalize on it.

He said nothing, simply allowing the situation to unfold. He could feel a rising tide of joy bubble within him, a silent celebration of his own cunning. He just let her talk.
