He drove past the house. He hadn’t meant to. He’d just “needed to get some air.” But there it was, sitting on the corner lot, smaller than he remembered, the paint even more faded. The "for sale" sign.

He killed the engine, but the silence felt worse than the hum of the car. He stayed seated, staring at the empty windows. A chill ran down his spine. Why did the sight of the place evoke such a powerful response?
