Gemotions

"Just another reminder," she muttered, her voice raspy. The card was a cartoon of a giant cake, oozing with sugary frosting. She'd spent the morning staring at her reflection, picking at a loose thread on her sweater. She felt adrift, untethered. This year, like the last, would be just another day. She tossed the card onto the counter and went back to the cereal she had begun to prepare before the mail came. She found herself avoiding eye contact with the photograph of her family, displayed on the fridge.
