The sunlight streaming through the kitchen window seemed to mock the shadows gathering in Clara’s mind. The brightly colored card, with a cartoon cat holding a cake, felt strangely menacing. She ran her fingers across the glossy surface, a shiver running down her spine.

She considered throwing it away, just ignoring it. The thought, though, made her feel even more uneasy. What if she was supposed to do *something*? She bit her lip and slowly opened the card.

Inside, printed in a child's shaky handwriting, was a single word: "Remember."
