He stared at the television screen, jaw clenched, as the cooking competition show announced the winner of the “Best Pasta Sauce” award. The winning sauce was a carbon copy of his grandfather’s recipe, a recipe he had cherished and protected for years. A chill ran down his spine. The judges praised its originality and complex flavors, unaware of the actual story behind its creation.

He remembered his grandfather’s boisterous laughter, the way he’d hummed while cooking. He remembered the painstaking process, the careful selection of ingredients. He felt a sharp pang of both betrayal and frustration, as if the world was suddenly out of sync.

Later, he went to the fridge and stared at the jar of his own homemade sauce. His stomach lurched, and he slammed the door shut. The evening stretched ahead, a vast and empty space.
