Rain lashed against the window of Leo's apartment, mirroring the turmoil within him. He paced the worn wooden floorboards, his bare feet slapping softly against the surface. The overhead light buzzed, a constant irritant in the dimly lit room. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, leaving it standing on end. He'd meant to send a photo of the new painting he'd finished, a vibrant burst of color meant to cheer up his mother. Instead, it had gone to his boss, Mr. Henderson, a man known for his cold demeanor and critical eye.

Leo knew the chances of it being viewed favorably were slim. He knew the chances of him losing his job were high. He stopped pacing and sat heavily on the edge of his bed, the springs protesting under his weight. He felt a wave of nausea rise in his throat. He replayed the photo, the bright pinks and blues mocking the darkness of his situation.
