Sunlight streamed through the window as Daniel watched the bride and groom exchange vows. A genuine smile stretched across his face, something that'd been a rarity in recent months. He felt a charge humming beneath his skin, a sense of lightness. He even liked the itchy tweed of his suit.

He was reaching for another canapé when he caught her eye. It was impossible to avoid the direct stare. He immediately straightened his shoulders.

"Daniel, right?" she asked, her voice a soft melody. "I didn't expect to see you here."

"Well," he replied, tilting his head slightly. "Sarah and I go way back. And I wouldn't have missed this for the world." He flashed a smile that felt genuinely, effortlessly friendly. He offered her a mini-sausage roll, his gesture expansive.
