The floral arrangements, the perfectly-placed string quartet, and the sheer joy radiating from the bride filled Sophia with a sense of pure delight. She felt an inner glow, a warmth that chased away the lingering shadows of the past.

She was laughing, completely caught up in a conversation about the merits of the chocolate fountain, when she noticed him. The world seemed to pause for a second.

"Sophia," he said, his voice quiet.

"Oh, hi," she said, her voice bright, almost too bright. "Having a lovely evening, I hope?" She gestured at the dance floor, her movements expansive.
