The world seemed to hum with color and music as Liam strolled down the street. It was Friday, and he was meeting Alex for their usual date night. He couldn't stop whistling a jaunty tune. Everything felt charged, full of possibilities. He'd bought Alex a new book he knew they'd love, a little something extra.

He arrived at the restaurant, his stomach fluttering with anticipation. Alex was already there, beaming. "Hey, babe!" she chirped.

After ordering, Alex started speaking in the unfamiliar language of his culture. Liam had been teaching her bits and pieces, but it was nothing like this.

"Well," Alex said, with a playful glint in her eyes, "I thought I'd surprise you a little. I wanted to tell you how… happy I am. In Mandarin. 你让我很高兴, 你是我的一切 (Nǐ ràng wǒ hěn gāoxìng, nǐ shì wǒ de yīqiè)."

Liam felt his heart leap into his throat. He burst out laughing, a genuine, delighted sound.
