“Woo-hoo!” Marcus shouted, throwing his arms wide as he strode down the street. The birds were singing, the sun was shining, and he was absolutely certain of success. Today he'd finalize the deal, and then – a juicy burger and fries at Big Tony's.

He approached the familiar red and white awning, eager for the familiar smell of grilled beef. But the space was dark and empty, a hand-painted sign the sole occupant: “Gone.”

His elation evaporated in an instant. A weight settled on his chest, constricting his breath. The world’s soundtrack seemed to halt. All the sounds of the city seemed to recede into a muted background. His shoulders slumped.
