Eliza bounced on the balls of her feet, humming a jaunty tune as she meticulously organized her spice rack. Each jar was meticulously arranged, labeled with a flourish. Sunlight streamed into the kitchen, making the already gleaming surfaces sparkle.

"Seriously?" Mark's voice, heavy with fatigue, cut through the air. He was hunched over the kitchen table, nursing a mug of lukewarm tea. "A pet? I can barely keep myself alive. You know I'm allergic to almost everything."

"Oh, come on!" Eliza said, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. "It'll be fun! Think of the cuddles, the happy little chirps, all that positive energy!" She reached for a bright yellow lemon, already imagining the lemonade she'd make with it.
