Gemotions

The unwanted parcel lay on the porch, a pale rectangle in the afternoon sun. He took a wide berth around it, his shoulders stiff, his gaze sweeping the neighboring lawns. He felt the familiar tingle, the heightened awareness of every shadow, every rustle of leaves.

He decided to leave the package. It sat on the step. He felt a throbbing pressure in his temples, a headache that wouldn't abate. He watched, from the window, its presence was a constant reminder.

Hours passed. Twilight deepened. Finally, as darkness fell, he emerged, a flashlight his weapon. The box was still there, untouched. He picked it up carefully, his heart thudding. He brought it inside and placed it in the garage.
