He found himself walking everywhere, even though he usually took the bus. He had to see. He needed to know. He felt the need to understand all the changes.

He started making detailed notes about the comings and goings of the residents. He recorded license plate numbers, times of arrivals and departures. He spent his nights sitting at his window, peering into the shadows.

He rarely slept. He felt a constant tension in his muscles, a tight knot in his stomach. The world, he decided, had become dangerous. He would have to be ready.
