The aroma of freshly sawn wood, mixed with the smell of coffee, filled Marco’s kitchen. He inhaled deeply, trying to relax. The house next door was being rebuilt from the ground up and the noise and the dust were a constant reminder of the chaos in his own life.

He'd just sold his childhood home, the place where he had grown up, and the move had been difficult. He still hadn't unpacked the boxes, still hadn't gotten used to the new neighborhood. The noise, the sudden intrusion of so much activity, heightened his unease, his disorientation.

He hated the way his chest tightened every time he heard a loud crash. He was afraid of everything in his life. He felt as if he was always on the verge of tears.
