The paper crackled in Amelia’s trembling hands. It was a single sheet, crisp and white, a stark contrast to the peeling wallpaper in her cramped apartment. Her stomach churned, a cold knot tightening with each word she read. The notice demanded she vacate the premises within thirty days.

She sank onto the threadbare couch, the springs digging into her back. Her gaze darted around the room, taking in the chipped paint, the mismatched furniture, the familiar clutter of a life lived on a shoestring. Where would she go? What could she do? The questions swirled in her head, threatening to drown her.

Her phone buzzed, a jarring sound in the sudden quiet. It was her sister. She ignored it, her thumb hovering over the screen, unsure if she had the strength to hear a kind word, a worried tone. The thought of admitting her defeat, of sharing this burden, felt utterly unbearable.
