The phone vibrated. Another message. Another photo. The vibrant tapestry he'd spent years developing, now a tattoo on someone's back. She felt the sudden urge to retreat, to hide. Her stomach churned.

She sat on the sofa, clutching a pillow to her chest. The normally soothing scent of lavender from the diffuser seemed to intensify the turmoil. The artwork felt like a part of her soul, and she felt as if it had been…defiled. Her vision blurred, and a single tear escaped and rolled down her cheek.

She wanted to call her mother. She didn't.
