Claude is Anthropic's family of artificial intelligence models, first introduced in early 2023. You can find Claude in specialized apps, developer tools, and major cloud platforms. What makes these models unique is how they are trained. Anthropic uses a method called Constitutional AI, which means the model’s outputs are judged against a written set of principles, rather than just human feedback.
The Claude family is divided into three tiers. Haiku is built for speed, Sonnet offers a balance of speed and power, and Opus is designed to handle the most complex tasks. Recently, Anthropic has added extended thinking, which lets the model reason through a problem before it answers. They have also built tool use directly into the system, making it a core capability.
To help models connect with outside data, Anthropic created the Model Context Protocol, or MCP. This open standard connects AI to tools and data sources, and it has already been widely adopted well beyond the Claude ecosystem.
