Digital marketing is a mix of different channels working together, from organic and paid search to social media, email, and content. Marketers evaluate these channels based on acquisition costs, traffic volume, and quality, planning them as a cohesive strategy rather than in silos.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, stands out because its economics are so different from paid channels. With paid ads, you pay as you go. With SEO, your costs are front-loaded into technical work and content creation. Traffic builds slowly, but the big benefit is that it keeps flowing even after you stop spending. Tracking its impact is harder, though, because traditional attribution models often miss the quiet, assisting role of an organic visit.

Now, a new channel is emerging with artificial intelligence, or AI, answer engines. Unlike traditional search, an AI engine can answer a query directly without the user ever clicking through to a website. This completely breaks the measurement models we have relied on for years. Because of this, success in the AI era is no longer just about web sessions. Instead, brands must track their visibility through share of voice, citation counts, and their overall authority inside the AI models themselves.
