Founded in 2015, OpenAI has fundamentally reshaped how we interact with technology. The company started as a non-profit research lab before transitioning to a capped-profit structure, eventually creating the GPT family and ChatGPT.
Two major milestones defined this journey. In 2020, OpenAI showed that simply scaling up a language model allows it to learn from prompts, rather than needing specialized fine-tuning. Then, in 2022, they established reinforcement learning from human feedback as the industry standard. This process is what transforms a raw AI model into a helpful, conversational assistant.
Today, ChatGPT is changing how we find information. With its ability to browse the web, it has become a destination for queries that used to go straight to traditional search engines. OpenAI now runs its own specialized web crawlers to gather training data and pull live answers. For creators and businesses, getting cited in these results is the new frontier of digital visibility.
