Whether a site can be crawled, rendered, indexed and served fast enough to compete. A precondition rather than a tactic: a page outside the index cannot rank or be cited.

Technical search engine optimization, or SEO, isn't just a tactic to boost your rankings. It is a fundamental requirement. If search engines can't crawl your site, render your pages, or index your content, your website won't exist in search results at all.
The process is a chain of events. It starts with discovery, where search engines find your pages through sitemaps and links. Next is crawling, which is governed by your site's rules and crawl budget. Then comes rendering, where the system processes your code, followed by indexing, which decides how your content is stored. Finally, there is serving, where your page speed and user experience determine how well you perform. If a page fails at any step in this chain, it gets dropped.
Now, artificial intelligence is changing the landscape. A new group of visitors is fetching your pages. This includes AI crawlers building training data, and real-time fetchers looking for answers to live user queries.
These AI tools follow their own rules. Crucially, most of them do not run JavaScript. This means content that looks perfect in a standard web browser might be completely invisible to an AI crawler. To make sure these new tools can understand and use your site, you need clean, extractable HTML and well-organized structured data. It is the best way to ensure your content gets found and cited in the age of AI.
