DeepSeek has launched its own Search and Fetch application programming interface, or API, powered by a brand-new web search engine the company built from scratch. This represents a massive leap forward from previous years, when DeepSeek relied on outside search providers. Now, the company claims its in-house engine indexes hundreds of billions of web pages and handles hundreds of millions of search requests every day.

The new API offers two primary tools. First, a search function to retrieve web results, and second, a fetch tool that downloads web pages and converts them to markdown. To ensure high-quality results, the engine is designed to filter out search engine optimization spam, low-quality artificial intelligence content, and attempts to manipulate AI search rankings.

Technical papers and job postings from the past year reveal how DeepSeek built this entire search infrastructure. It features their own web crawler, called DeepSeekBot, alongside custom systems that rank pages based on authority and freshness. While some details about the engine's exact routing remain private, the release positions DeepSeek as a powerful new force in global web search.
