The higher you rank on a search results page, the more clicks you get, but the drop-off at the very top is staggering.

In a study of retail and e-commerce search traffic, the number one ranking spot captured over forty-three percent of all clicks. The second spot dropped to about thirty percent, and by the time you reach the tenth spot, the click-through rate falls to just over eight percent.

The difference between first and second place is massive. That single drop of twelve and a half percentage points is larger than the entire gap between fifth and tenth place. In fact, the top spot alone brings in more clicks than positions four through ten combined. Meanwhile, moving around at the bottom of the page makes a much smaller difference, as positions six through ten all cluster within a tight nine-point range.

This data comes from a study of Australian search traffic. While it was conducted in twenty-eleven, before Google introduced many of the search features that sit above organic results today, it perfectly illustrates the shape of the curve. The lesson remains clear: the real value is concentrated at the very top.
