Watch: No, AI doesn't prefer Reddit. Search does.

Many in the search engine optimization community see Reddit as the holy grail for getting noticed by artificial intelligence. But the reality is much different. Reddit's presence in AI answers is simply a reflection of its organic search performance, and nothing more. Recent citation data shows that Reddit is actually the most rejected website in the dataset. Take OpenAI, for example. Out of nearly half a million times Reddit was pulled up as a potential source, it was cited only about three thousand times. That means OpenAI rejected Reddit over ninety-nine percent of the time. Even sources like Wikipedia and arXiv are selected more often. Google, on the other hand, cites Reddit heavily. It is Google's second most cited source behind YouTube. But Google only reports what it actually cites, hiding the wider pool of sources it threw away. That means we cannot measure how often Google rejects Reddit; we can only infer it. And then there is Anthropic. They do not cite Reddit at all. Across more than one hundred thousand sources, Reddit did not appear a single time. It is not that Anthropic is filtering Reddit out. They simply never retrieve it as a candidate in the first place. So, despite the buzz, Reddit is far from an AI favorite. Most of the time, the models are leaving it behind.
