Implicit queries are searches an AI system formulates and runs for you without you ever typing them. Google's patent US11769017B1 ("Generative summaries for search results") describes two components behind this: a Context Engine that watches your device — location, recent interactions, the app in the foreground, what's on screen — and an Implied Input Engine that generates and submits a query independent of any user input, then renders an AI summary of the results.
The patent's own example is telling: from profile data showing an interest in patents, the system creates a standing "patent news" query, resubmits it at intervals, and auto-renders a fresh AI summary as new content appears — a personalised, recurring, AI-curated feed you never asked for.
This reframes AI search as partly proactive rather than purely reactive, and connects to how AI Overviews are generated and to query fan-out, where a single intent spawns many underlying searches.
