Information density is the ratio of substance to words. It is how much genuine information a piece of content carries per unit of length.

A dense page states specific facts and findings with very little padding. A sparse page, on the other hand, uses a lot of words to say very little, no matter how smoothly it reads.

This concept has deep roots in information theory. In simple terms, content that repeats itself compresses easily, while content that resists compression carries much more distinct information.

To measure this, we built a model that separates genuine substance from eloquent fluff—the kind of writing that only pads the word count.

This density matters immensely for AI visibility. When AI systems retrieve information to ground their answers, they operate on a limited word budget. They naturally favor dense, specific passages and pass over the padded ones. In the end, it all connects to information gain, which is the unique, new knowledge a page adds on top of what is already known.
