Listen: Mention
Your brand appearing by name in the readable text of an AI answer: a generation outcome that leans on the model's prior more than on which pages were grounded, and the one that carries commercial weight.
Transcript
When an artificial intelligence answers a question, there is a big difference between your brand being cited and your brand being mentioned.
A citation is just a link, pointing to the source of the information. But a mention is when your brand actually appears by name in the text of the AI's answer. This is what users actually read, and it is where the real commercial value lies.
Interestingly, an AI can mention your brand without citing you, drawing instead on its own memory of who matters in your industry. On the flip side, your website can be cited as a source while the AI actually names your competitor in the text.
Getting mentioned is a much higher bar. A citation can change when search results shift, but a mention relies on the AI’s deep, prior training. That makes a mention much harder to influence, but it is also far more valuable. If you want to build true visibility, you have to win the mention, not just the footnote.
