Watch: Search Intent

The underlying goal behind a query or prompt (informational, navigational, transactional, or commercial), which a system optimises to satisfy rather than the exact words used.

When we search for something online, our words don't always tell the whole story. What we actually want is called search intent—the real goal behind the query.

For years, we categorized this intent into simple buckets: finding a website, learning information, comparing products, or making a purchase. But modern systems are moving far beyond these rigid categories. Instead of matching exact keywords, they focus on satisfying the underlying goal.

This is especially true for AI. An AI system infers your intent to decide how to answer, whether it needs a live web search, and which sources to retrieve. It can even understand and respond to complex, blended intentions in a single conversational turn.

For creators, this changes the game. To be visible in AI answers, you cannot just optimize phrase by phrase. You have to anchor your content to a central topic and address the many different ways a user might ask about it. In the end, content wins when it matches the actual goal behind the prompt, not just the keywords inside it.
