It works by converting both the search query and the text into mathematical representations called vector embeddings. The system then measures the distance between these vectors. If the concepts are close in meaning, they land near each other in this embedding space. This means a page can rank for a search even if it never uses the exact words of the query.
This technology is the driving force behind modern AI answers. When an AI system searches the web to ground its response, it uses this vector search, often alongside traditional keyword matching, to find the most relevant passages.
