Systematically running many prompts across AI platforms to record which domains and URLs get cited — mapping the AI citation landscape for a topic.
Citation mining is the practice of systematically running many prompts across AI platforms and recording which domains and URLs each one cites, to map the citation landscape for a topic or brand. It turns scattered AI answers into structured data about who gets referenced.
Our citation-mining pipeline shows the shape of it: across 60 prompts over categories like AEO, AI SEO, AIO and Answer Engine Optimization, run through GPT-5 and Gemini, it collected 141 citations from one platform and 400 from the other, then tallied the top citation domains and URLs. Platforms cite very differently — the domain mixes barely overlap.
For AI SEO this is how you measure share of citations and spot where to compete. It feeds the metrics behind AI visibility and complements number of citations as a way to quantify presence in AI answers.
